The "Honesty Test" for Your Dryer: Signs You're Overloading

Your dentist can spot the telltale signs of neglected oral care with just a glance, much like how our technicians decipher appliance issues at a glance. We call it the "Honesty Test" of appliances.
Recently, we encountered a dryer conundrum that perfectly illustrates this point. A customer complained about a noisy dryer, and upon disassembly, our technician immediately noticed black powder under the drum rollers. This pointed to one clear culprit: overloading. Sure enough, further inspection revealed a failed drum roller and damage to the drive belt.
The customer's confession confirmed our suspicions – their loved one habitually overloaded the dryer, packing it to the brim with laundry day in, day out.
So, how much should you load into your dryer?
It all boils down to your washer. If you own a front-load washer, adhere to the 2/3 to 3/4 loading rule. Overloading not only strains the dryer but also compromises the washing quality. Front-load washers rely on clothes tumbling over each other for effective cleaning. Overloaded loads hinder this process, resulting in subpar washing. Keep an eye out for clothes staying put in the middle during agitation – a sure sign of overcrowding.
Top-load washers follow similar principles. Avoid overloading to prevent small items from getting stuck or lost during the wash cycle. Remember, overloading compromises both washing effectiveness and machine longevity.
Consider the type of items you're washing, too. Heavy items like towels and jeans require extra room to move around. Aim to load no more than halfway and opt for the bulky items cycle if available.
Overloading your dryer spells trouble – from longer drying times to potential clothing damage. Just like attempting to roast a large turkey on high heat, cramming too many clothes in results in uneven drying and increased risk of damage.
To save time without sacrificing cleanliness, explore quick or speed wash options. You'll be surprised by how effectively they refresh lightly soiled clothes.
