If a few photos could perfectly illustrate just how much top-load washers love to eat socks, these are it. The white sock was located within the base of the cabinet, and the black sock had become lodged at the base of the tub where the drain hose connects, preventing the washer from draining. How does this happen, and why are top-load washers more prone to eating socks than front-loads?

The Anatomy of a Sock-Eating Machine

Top-load washer tubs are like two cups within each other. The inner cup contains the clothes and is the one that spins, while the outer cup contains the inner cup. If the washer is overloaded during spin, small items can be ejected overboard. If they slip into the gap between the two tubs, they end up in the drain hose or pump. If they go over both tubs, they disappear into the cabinet.

Preventing Lost Socks and Other Small Items

To prevent this from happening, here are a few tips:

  • Don't Overload the Washer: You should not load your washer more than 2/3 to 3/4 full. Overloading increases the chances of items being ejected.

  • Use Laundry Bags: Any small items such as socks, small underwear, thongs, bras, masks, etc., should be placed in laundry bags. These are mesh bags with zippers that you fill halfway with these small items. Your clothes will still be cleaned, and they virtually eliminate disappearing socks. Laundry bags are inexpensive (they're available at the dollar store) and come in various sizes.

  • Check Pockets and Collars: Ensure you empty all pockets and remove collar stays from dress shirts to prevent small items from getting stuck in the washer.

Why Front-Load Washers Are Different

While top-load washers are more prone to this issue, front-load washers aren't entirely immune. Small items can still make their way between the gap between the rubber door gasket and the inner tub. Using laundry bags can help mitigate this risk as well.
